UPF is the term for Ultraviolet Protection Factor and it represents a specific scale or rating that the UV protection provides by various materials.

Sunscreens have always carried the SPF identification code, and the term UPF was selected to distinguish it from the SPF screening code.

The higher the UPF rating, the more effective and longer the protection against UVR will be.

The higher the UPF rating of any quality shade cloth will result in longer protection against UV Radiation. Any quality shade cloth with a UPF rating of 15 will allow just one fifteenth of the UV Radiation to penetrate through it; as a UPF rating of 20 for example will only allow just onetwentieth of the UV Radiation to penetrate through the cloth weave.
